The idea behind Carbon Balancing is that even when all steps have been taken by a given entity (say a firm, charity or individual) to reduce emissions at source, some residual greenhouse gas emissions are unavoidable. These emissions can be countered if one takes steps to avert emissions elsewhere – i.e. to balance them. The World Land Trust (WLT) Carbon Balanced programme balance these emissions through projects that are certified to well-recognised international standards and include both;
- Protecting carbon-rich habitats, which avoids the release of stored carbon and enables the regeneration of degraded habitats, home to hundreds of threatened species, whilst gradually re-absorbing atmospheric CO2
- Reforestation projects that directly remove atmospheric CO2, whilst ensuring a focus on wider conservation goals beyond CO2 removals alone.
